Associate CounsellorJamie Dunlop Khau, RTC

About

Hi, I’m Jamie Dunlop Khau—a Registered Therapeutic Counsellor RTC #2907 with the Association Of Cooperative Counselling Therapists of Canada, Certified Early Childhood Educator, Mindfulness Teacher, and a proud parent of three children. For nearly 22 years, I’ve navigated the joys and challenges of parenting, and these experiences have profoundly shaped my ability to connect with children, youth, and families with deep understanding and empathy.

My areas of focus include:

  • Counselling for children 6+ and teens dealing with trauma, anxiety, or behavioral challenges
  • Support for parents in building stronger, more attuned relationships with their children
  • Mindfulness-based approaches to emotional well-being
  • Play and expressive therapies to help children (ages 6+)  explore emotions and build resilience

About Me

My journey to becoming a counsellor is deeply personal and shaped by my lived experiences. Growing up, I faced significant developmental trauma. One of my parents struggled with addiction, and the other, who faced hearing impairment and language barriers, also lacked formal education. We lived in poverty, and the stress within our home often spilled over into my early childhood behaviors, leading to impulsivity and inattention in the classroom. By adolescence, I was engaging in risky behaviors and eventually dropped out of school, becoming an at-risk youth.

Despite these struggles, I have compassion for my parents. They were doing the best they could with the emotional capacity they had. However, the challenges in my home left me without the sense of safety and connection that every child needs.

It wasn’t until I attended an alternative high school at 16 and met a compassionate counsellor that my healing journey began. For the first time, I felt truly seen, safe, and understood. Her unwavering empathy and support transformed my life, and I don’t know if I’d be here today if it wasn’t for her. That experience inspired me to one day offer the same kind of support to others.

At 19, I became a mother. Parenting my first child at such a young age while continuing to heal taught me resilience, humility, and the importance of breaking cycles. Determined to create a better future for my family, I went back to school, graduated, and pursued post-secondary studies in Early Childhood Education. Early in my career, I taught in preschools, ran my own childcare center, and supported children and youth in schools. Later, I transitioned into counselling, specializing in helping children and youth impacted by abuse and trauma.

Parenting has been one of my greatest teachers. My own mistakes have deepened my understanding of what children truly need: connection, compassion, and the space to express their emotions without fear of judgment. Now, with over 22 years of parenting experience, I am a proud mother of three. Two of my children are in post-secondary and my youngest has just entered high school. Parenting through challenges and triumphs has profoundly shaped my ability to support families with empathy and insight.

Today, I am passionate about creating safe spaces where children and youth feel heard, validated, and empowered to heal. My own journey has shown me the importance of this, and I strive to offer that same sense of safety to every child I work with.

I bring a trauma-informed and compassionate approach to my work, drawing on my personal and professional experiences to foster connection and growth. Becoming a counsellor wasn’t just a career choice—it truly feels like my purpose. Helping young people and their families heal and thrive is what drives me every day, and I am deeply grateful for the opportunity to walk alongside them on their journey.

Counselling Philosophy & Therapeutic Approach

I’m passionate about creating a safe, nurturing space where children, teens, and parents feel seen, heard, and truly supported. Whether you’re navigating trauma, seeking help for your child’s emotional struggles, or wanting to strengthen family connections, I’m here to walk alongside you with warmth and understanding.

As a counsellor, I draw on evidence-based tools and techniques such as mindfulness practices, play therapy, emotion regulation strategies, attachment-based interventions, and expressive therapies. I tailor my approach to be developmentally appropriate, ensuring that the tools and strategies align with each child’s unique stage of growth and understanding.

Whether I’m helping a child learn tools to manage big emotions or supporting parents in strengthening their bond with their child, my focus is always on fostering safety, trust, and connection. Together, we’ll foster resilience, deepen emotional connections, and empower your family to thrive.
